- February 05
Alright now,
the year is starting to cruise! I thought
winter would be brief, but it is hanging
on for a while longer. But, man, have I
got spring fever?! I’ll get into that
later...
First off, Happy Birthdays
this past month to my Mom, Ginny Holder,
and my bud, Polly. Also, my thoughts go
out to Matt Doran’s wife, Michelle,
who lost her Mom in January. That family
has had a tough year, so let Matt and Michelle
know you love them, please. You can see
Matt with me at Superior on Feb. 11. Or,
you can see Matt with his band, Phat Hat,
at Sogo on Feb. 4. I’m going to try
to be there, too.
Last Sunday without football
was sad. Another football season is about
over. I have no great Super Bowl plans,
except to sneak in from the Bacchus parade
every few moments to check the score. Looks
like a wet and cold Mardi Gras this year.
Many have asked if I am riding in Southdowns
this year on February 4. This year, my krewe
decided to take a year off. We have two
buddies in Iraq (can’t wait to see
you soon Clay), two with babies arriving
or just arrived, two building houses, and
me who was just kinda tired of driving the
operation. I may go watch the parade, but
will not be riding. I’ll miss it and
we’ll probably be back with a vengeance
next year! I will partake of Mardi Gras
on Sunday and Tuesday in New Orleans. Sunday,
probably around Ernst Café and Vic’s
Kangaroo on Tchoupitoulas, and Tuesday in
the Quarter (crazy, I know, but you gotta
walk it once).
I had a good time playing
a new gig in the French Quarter during January.
An old buddy owns The Little Easy on Conti,
just steps off of Bourbon. He hopes we can
make that a regular thing. Thanks to G Langlois
for singing with me. I’ll keep you
posted, but check my calendar for updates.
I might do some Wednesdays and Saturdays
there, soon. Nothing is scheduled for now.
I am looking into a couple of other New
Orleans gigs - I really want to explore
that market more for acoustic gigs. I think
it is something that is lacking there, but
very much appreciated.
February is kinda slow,
as I begin to get my spring fever. I start
this month with an entire week off! I need
it, friends. Gigs have been great, by the
way. Thank you! I’ll play at Satterfield’s
(www.satterfields.com),
with Charles Pierce on percussion, on the
night before their big Mardi Gras parade
in New Roads - Feb. 7 at 9pm. I’m
subbing for John Gros at the Uptown Bulldog
twice in February and will be back there
every Thursday in March. I think we are
starting to develop a new crowd there, after
a slight lull. Along with a private party
in New Orleans, I am going to play at Ernst
Cafe (www.ernstcafe.net)
on February 18 at 7pm. That place is on
South Peter, between the CBD and the warehouse
district - my first time appearing there.
I was not booked by the club, but by a group
having some kind of occasion there. However,
it is not private, so check it out.
Spanky’s has been
terrific, as of late. Charles (when he can
be there) has added a lot of fun for me
and the audience - as well as adding to
the bar tab! hehe.... I’m glad he
has asked to come jam with me on Sundays.
He does it voluntarily, so slip him some
tips when you are there!
I’m so sorry for
not getting my new pics on this website.
I have lots of time off in February, so
that will happen, I promise. Thanks for
all the pics you guys provide for me to
peruse and use.
Regarding spring fever:
I’m dying for crawfish, LSU baseball,
and festivals. JazzFest schedules are up!
St. Pat’s day is close! U2 is on tour,
and it’s rumored Paul McCartney will
announce a tour later this year! Happy Valentine’s
Day to Selena! My birthday comes right smack
dab during all the best festivals! I’m
busy, healthy, and lucky, as well as very
grateful to you all. God bless our troops,
who guaranteed and saw through an election
in Iraq this past week. Hope this ends soon
and they are back home.
OK, I’ll stop, but
keep checking the schedule for changes and
updates. I expect to be back on the patio
at Mid-City Bulldog (www.draftfreak.com)
in April. No more Wednesdays with Chris,
as his sister is returning. Best wishes
to you all for a safe and happy Super Bowl
Sunday and Mardi Gras season. Happy Valentine’s
to you lovers.
Late,
Kirk
