February 2010

As I write this, our beloved New Orleans Saints are preparing to go to the 44th Super Bowl, Feb. 7, 2010! And it is surreal and exciting. We were lucky enough to attend two games this year – the Dome opener v. Detroit, and the Patriots blowout. We also spent the Arizona playoff game in the city, sitting in Turtle Bay on Decatur, and loving the city. I worked the night of the NFC Championship game, while I watched videos of the throng in the French Quarter. And I walked in a dress, with thousands of Buddy Diliberto and Saints fans, on Jan. 31 to help fulfill Buddy D’s promise to wear a dress on Poydras St. if the Saints ever made it to the Super Bowl! If you don’t live here, you can’t believe the feeling of hope we are all experiencing. Were we to lose, I can imagine many hearts breaking; however, I think we will still be happy for ourselves, our team, and the city of New Orleans. Should the Saints prevail, the tears and cheers will be overwhelming. So, with gusto… Geaux Saints! Who Dat?! We love you and thank you for the best season in team history! Black and Gold Super Bowl!!!!! The welcome home Saints parade is Feb. 9 in New Orleans. Hopefully, it’s a victory parade!
Almost forgotten this year, it is Mardi Gras Carnival Time, too. So, it looks like Selena and I will try to attend a parade or two. No, not riding in the Southdowns Parade, again, this year. I do believe our krewe has all but let that time in our lives pass. I do hope we will organize again, someday, to ride in another parade. My feeling is that we did that and it’s time to move up and on. I will ride in a Super Krewe one day!
A Happy Valentine’s Day to my sweetheart, Selena. I’m lucky and blessed to have you in my life. Thank you for all you give to me. I love you.
This month is still pretty slow, but I have a new gig: Bourbon Street Daiquiris on Coursey Blvd. in Baton Rouge, Feb. 6, 7pm – 11pm. I worked for the owner before, over at a place in Denham Springs. Nice guy and I hope it will be the beginning of a permanent venue in my gig rotation. I’ll also be at Churchill’s, Southpaws, George’s, Onezia, On the Half Shell, and Spanky’s in Prairieville. I’m taking off Feb. 7 for the Super Bowl; Heath Ransonnet of Spank the Monkey plays Spanky’s. Then, on Feb. 14, Toby Templet covers Spanky’s for me. Please go check out my buddies there.
I want to thank Mac and Rudy for hooking me up with The Rusty Nail, and Ivan there for giving me a new gig in January. It was great to play in New Orleans again! We had a blast. I’m back there on March 26 and April 17. It’s in the Warehouse District. Also, I’m so grateful to all my regular gigs that are keeping me on the schedule. Times are a little tight, but I am blessed to have such great clients and colleagues in this business.
SPECIAL GIG OF THE MONTH: Kevin Schexnayder and Dennis Pennington are going to join me at Sullivan’s Ringside on Feb. 19, 9pm. My usual band couldn’t make this gig, and since our Thanksgiving Eve Trio is so fun and popular, I asked Kevin and Dennis to help me create a band for Sullivan’s. Kevin will play the drum set and Bill Grass joins us on bass. We might have some other guests, as well. It will be more rockin’ than the dance stuff I ordinarily do there. I hope it will be fun, and we expect Wokanowans to pack the joint. I hope we deliver a good night for the club and for the crowd. Should be fun.
Parades take the lead in my festival update this month, so I just recommend you go to www.nola.com, click on Entertainment, then Mardi Gras, and you will find the parade routes and schedules. It is almost spring festival season, so I’ll have the big updates soon. Can’t wait for Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, St. Patty’s Day, Memphis in May, Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, Festival International, and our birthday weekends!
A little bird tells me this might be G’s last year as Elvis, in the Elvis and Jesse Show. Let’s hope it’s just a Favre moment!
Have a great Super Bowl party, my friends! This is our time! Happy Mardi Gras, too. What a wonderful time to be in Louisiana and close to New Orleans. And how lucky am I, for all I have, and for your friendships and support….
