January 2010
....update on the Lollapalooza gig on Friday, Jan. 8. While my newsletter says I'll be in the Chase Bank Atrium, following Kevin and Dennis, that has been adjusted. I'll be in the art gallery, across the block, upstairs (Arts Council Building/Firestation) from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. A lot of the silent auction stuff will be inside there. Kevin and Dennis still play the Atrium, followed by another act.
....also, Rhett Anthony Glindmeyer is now gonna join me Sun. Jan. 17 at Spanky's Daiquiris in Prairieville for the night before MLK Day show!
I started writing a bunch of philosophical, personal feelings, reminiscing, looking back to old days, BS newsletter today! Hehe… I guess a new year brings memories and wishes and plans and regrets, and challenges and excitement. But, after I read it a few times, I erased it all and decided to say I hope we’ll get to sit with a beer, sing some songs, eat some food, watch a game and I’ll tell you about all that stuff, floating about my mind, after several of those drinks – if you have the time. It’s time to do all that this year requires of me…. and it’s gonna be great. Come on Saints!! We need ya, love ya, and want this ride to last all the way!!
I start of 2010 with a cool show at the annual Greater Baton Rouge Arts Council’s Lollapalooza, in the Chase Bank Atrium downtown, Friday, Jan. 8. The event is in the bank, the Old Fire Station on Laurel, and all over that block, with live music on several stages, food and drink from many local restaurants, and other fun stuff. Gonna be cold, but it’s a fun block party. I play 7:30pm – 9:30pm in the bank, following my friends Kevin Schexnayder and Dennis Pennington on the same stage, indoors. This is a ticketed event, though - $40 in advance, $45 that night. Tickets get you all the food and drink and entrances.
Speaking of Kevin and Dennis (with whom I’ve done the trio every Thanksgiving Eve for a few years), we are going to do that trio, with full band at Sullivan’s Ringside on Feb. 19! I’m looking forward to that one, and we hope we’ll make it special – might even practice!
I’m also reappearing in New Orleans this month, at The Rusty Nail on Jan. 15. Selena and I went there with good buds Mac and Rudy after the first Saints game this year. Turns out I worked with the owner, way back when, at Joe’s Crab Shack, when I played that patio. Also, some of his patrons knew me from the Bulldog and other gigs. So, hopefully I’ll get some new shows in NO - http://www.therustynail.org.
That’s gonna be a 10pm gig.
I’ll be at the usual spots – Churchill’s, Spanky’s, Southpaws, Onezia, George’s, On the Half Shell, and Sullivan’s (with Nick DiMaio this time on drums). With times being kinda slow, I’m grateful to have all my regular gigs continuing. So, I hope you can make a show or two.
I was so shocked and sad to hear about The Caterie burning down! It was the place where I was given the chance to create this career of mine. It was the place where I made so many memories with so many friends and fans. And, I had just played there on Christmas night, with many of those same folks in attendance. All the people that work and perform there have my thoughts and prayers. I doubt anyone knows what Darren and Kevin will do, but it’s hard to imagine Baton Rouge without the Caterie. Bill Stafford has many video images from the place – we made a few of our silly party videos there. Also, he taped one of my shows there 20 years ago. I hope he can digitize that stuff and post it all soon.
Thanks again for 2009, my friends. You do so much for me. I hope it’s a great year for you all. Mine is already happy and full of plans and excitement. I’m ready for warmer weather and festivals. Mardi Gras is upon us and St. Pat’s is not far behind. But, for now, let’s pull for the Saints to get to the Super Bowl. WHO DAT?!! S and me got lots to do, too!
God Bless our troops and you all,
Kirk
