July 2010

Greetings from the lush grounds of the ranch, here in G-town.  The grass is growing so fast this summer.  I can’t keep up with it due to so much rain.  Glad to see the yard doing so well, though.  I have hopes that beautiful Louisiana can recover from the mess that is spoiling wetlands and threatening oyster beds and fish.  I believe seafood is readily available, clean, and inspected more than ever before – it’s just that many boats are out there fighting the oil, not catching fish.

We get so used to things being taken care of, fixed, and finished that we are shocked to find out we broke something and nobody knows how to fix it.  But, with each new idea, you wonder why they started with the itsy bitsy fixes and didn’t try the best and biggest fix, after …say oh… 2 months!  And to use this catastrophe to shut down all deep operations in the Gulf is just the most idiotic thing I’ve seen in a while (though, they are coming fast and furious).

I am constantly reminded of how lucky I am.  I have so many wonderful places to play, and I probably could work more, were I able to sing that much.  This area has managed to create so many gigs for acoustic acts.  I think Baton Rouge (and it’s surrounding area) could market itself as an acoustic Mecca, like Memphis does with blues, or New Orleans does with jazz.  Through this struggling economy, and now this oil spill threat, I am blessed to feel that I can make it through another year, trying to entertain folks.  So, I’m trying to stay positive in this newsletter, and I sure hope you are doing well.

Many of our own neighbors and fellow citizens are struggling, and will be faced with tough times.  I just pray God will help our leaders with some bright ideas and wisdom.  And if you are facing challenges, I hope you will have faith, keep trying, depend on yourself and find that lighted path.  You can do it!  I don’t mean to sound simple-minded and naïve, but I just believe living is about faith in better times and better things, while taking care of your own business, lending a hand, and enjoying the time you have here.

I’m gonna miss playing the Louisiana Dental Association Fishing Rodeo – one of my yearly gigs, held in Grand Isle.  But the month is very full.  I’m back at Mi Padre’s in Prairieville!  And check my Dates link for shows at Serrano’s, Spanky’s, Southpaws, Churchill’s, George’s, On the Half Shell, The Rusty Nail, Sullivan’s, Country Club of Louisiana, and Metairie Country Club!  I will be back at Onezia and Mike Anderson’s Gonzales in August - and I just lined up dates in the fall for Monjuni’s on Jefferson.

There aren’t many festivals at this time of year, but here are a few:

Well, that’s actually a pretty nice list for July.  I love that sports talk is beginning to gen up on football!  I can’t wait for Sept. 9, Saints v. Vikings!  I cleared the calendar… hehe.  No predictions, yet.  I’ll do that next month.

I hope to see everyone out soon at a gig.  Hope your summer vacation time is going well and you are able to find some nice beach to walk on, a park to ride some rides, or a festival to eat some great food, while you dance with fireworks lighting up the sky!

Happy Birthday United States of America
God Bless our brave soldiers!
