Hi friends, and how
was your Mardi Gras? I didn’t do
much of what I thought I would do. The
Southdowns Parade was business as usual.
We ended up having a good ride, as the
weather cleared up just as we put my speakers
on the tow vehicle. But, the ride is too
fast. What used to be a 3-hour parade,
has become 2 hours. To me, that is just
too quick for all the time and money we
spend on this. Like I said last month,
I feel I’ve "done" this
parade and will look for something new
next year. Our krewe discussed moving
a day over and trying to join Spanish
Town.
As I said, I didn’t
do much for Mardi Gras. Selena lost a
step-brother in that military helicopter
crash in Africa on Feb. 17. Ten soldiers,
including Brandon Dronet, lost their lives
during a military exercise. The group
was deployed as part of the Combined Joint
Task Force-Horn of Africa, which is responsible
for fighting terrorism in nine countries
in the region: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Somalia
in Africa and Yemen on the southwestern
corner of the Arabian Peninsula. I honor
this young man for his service to our
country and offer my condolences to his
folks, Gene and Cynthia, his wife, Summer,
and his 4 children.
I feel proud about something.
When we did our Elvis and Jesse hurricane
relief party last year, we sent our funds
to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. It
was not really a group anyone had heard
much of, but now, I am seeing many fundraisers
sending monies to this group. I guess
I feel that I did pick a good charity.

So, I picked up a private
party on the same day as the Baton Rouge
St. Patrick’s Day parade, March
18. We always enjoy this day. I’ve
become part of a nice celebration on the
parade route - thanks to Kelly, a friend
of Beth’s, Selena’s buddy.
We get out there early and have terrific
food. And it always seems to be one of
the best weather days of the year. This
year, I’ll do that, then go do some
music from 2pm-6pm. Should be a nice day.
I’ll be close to Zee Zee Gardens,
so if you hear me, drop by.
My band, Room Service,
has several gigs this month, as you can
see on the calendar. I’m enjoying
doing my solo show at the Pastime Lounge.
Nice crowd and fantastic food, as well
as a friendly staff. I haven’t been
at the Half Shell for a while, but will
do a show there on March 17 - St. Patrick’s
Day. Liz told me there is a Killians beer
promotion that evening, in celebration
of the date. So, that might be fun.
What else can I tell
you guys about? Spanky’s has announced
it’s big summertime party dates.
On these dates, there will be live music
all afternoon and evening. I hope many
of my buds will drop in and jam. Here
is a list of those events:
April 2 - Spanky’s
1st Annual River Bash
May 21 - Spanky’s
2nd Annual Crawfish Boil
June 25 - Spanky’s
3rd Annual Beach Party
July 23 - Spanky’s
2nd Annual Blues Fest
If any of you musicians
want to be involved, feel free to get
in touch with me. We’ll have fun
and I’m sure Spanky’s will
pitch in some food and drinks for you.
Way ahead - I suspect we’ll do the
Elvis and Jesse show again in August.
Happy Birthday to Chris
LeBlanc - March 4.
I hope you have a great
spring. LSU basketball appears to be heading
to the NCAA tournament. I remember being
at the Bulldog last year, as LSU lost
in the big dance. It was so packed, that
I didn’t even play! Man, I miss
that gig. LSU baseball is rolling and
I love listening to that on Sunday afternoons.
It’s gonna be a fun summer and I
hope to see you all, soon.
Thanks,
Kirk
