May 2010

The news was a little delayed this month due to birthday weeks for Selena and me.  April was a very full month, including French Quarter Fest, Earth Day, Jazz Fest (both weekends for me), a big dinner with friends at Mezza Luna for Selena’s b-day, and a crawfish boil for mine.  So grateful for such great family, friends, neighbors, musicians, and business associates that make my life so wonderful.  Thank you Selena for a special birthday season – always a “best of” part of our year, I think.  Always hard to choose, among all the spring festivals, what we will do, but we did great!

So, even though the party is ovah (or on hold for a while), this month includes some gigs of note, and fun.  On Wed. May 5, I’ll do our annual Cinco de Kirko party at Mi Padre’s in Prairieville, 6pm – 9:30pm.  Joining me, as usual, are Matt Doran on keys, Charles Pierce will play drums, and Laurie Whitney comes in this year to sing with us.  Any musician that comes out and jams with us gets the first drink on me!  Get there early for a seat.

Friday, May 7, is another favorite gig of mine:  “Hot Art, Cool Nights,” the event sponsored by Mid City Merchants, when I’ll play at Monjuni’s on Jefferson @ Government – 6pm.  This is a fun evening and you can find food, wine, art, and music all through that corridor of town.  Walk or take the trolley around, and come eat at Monjuni’s, and I’ll be outside by the patio, with Italian margaritas and sangria flowing.

Saturday, May 8, my Sullivan’s band will play for the Lorraine Ott Memorial Golf Tournament for Cancer Services of Baton Rouge/Leukemia/Lympoma, 2pm – 3:30pm.  Jimmy Ott puts this event on each year, and I’m proud to donate some music for the folks participating.  This is at Oaks of Sherwood in BR.  I also appear at Churchill’s that evening, solo.

Sunday, May 16, marks the return of the Spanky’s Daiquiris Prairieville Block Party!  This event is always HUGE.  Calvin works really hard, along with all the Spanky’s crew, to put on a festival-sized party, right there in the parking lot.  The guys from PSS sound will set up and crank up the iPod tunes around 5:30pm, but then, it’s THE CHRIS LEBLANC BAND onstage at 6pm!  And then, at 9pm, it’s THE CHEE WEEZ!!  This should be a fun day, with all kinds of fun, inside and out of the bar.  I think there is a $10 cover.

Saturday, May 22, I’ll do my first show at Mike Anderson’s in the Gonzales Holiday Inn… find me on the patio from 7pm – 10pm.  This patio is a lovely place – Selena and I have enjoyed a great dinner at Mike’s, then a relaxing glass of wine on the patio.

And then, on the Sunday before Memorial Day, May 30, Charles Pierce joins me at Spanky’s P’ville for a big night before a Monday holiday!  These Sundays are always fun and special, with most people off the following morning.

I’ve got great shows and private events this month.  Looking forward to them all.  Check my Dates page for all shows.

I’d like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, Ginny Holder, out in Phoenix.  Love you Mom and can’t wait to get back out there.  Happy Mother’s Day to Selena – love you, honey – you have raised 3 wonderful people!  Great job….

The festivals slow down as the summer gets warmer, but I’ll list a few below:

May 6 – 9  Cochon de Lait Festival in Mansura  http://cochondelaitfestival.com  After consuming two delicious cochon de lait poboys at Jazz Fest, this sounds interesting.  Pork Fat!!

April 27 – May 9  Contraband Days in Lake Charles  http://contrabanddays.com  Never have been – always sounds like boating fun

All May  Memphis in May  www.memphisinmay.org   It’s been a few years since I’ve been and Beale Street has passed – but you can look into the other weekend events, like the BBQ Championship!

May 29 – 30  Bayou Country Superfest in Baton Rouge  http://www.visitbatonrouge.com/visitorslocals/country_fest - LSU’s Tiger Stadium serves as a huge country concert venue

May 27 – 30  Jambalaya Festival in Gonzales  http://www.jambalayafestival.org  My hometown’s claim to fame is jambalaya.  There will be great local bands.

May 28 – 30  Greek Fesival in New Orleans  http://greekfestnola.com  I never like to miss this one.  Just a great little church fair, but it draws some crowds.  The dancing is fun and I wish someone would try with me!

May 25 – 29  New Orleans Food and Wine Experience  http://www.nowfe.com  We did one of the Grand Tastings in the Super Dome last year.  Worth the high ticket price – taste some incredible dishes and expensive wines.

Summer is here and I’m in my new birthday lounge chair, getting a little sun while I write this newsletter.  Work is going really well and life is happy, full, and busy.  I’m very lucky and blessed.  I’ll be playing back in New Orleans next month.  Thanks to all the private party hosts and clubs/restaurants hiring me this month.  I hope to see you out.  Big congrats to Dylan L. who graduates this month on May 14!  Happy b-days to Dylan L., Raegan L., Richard Abbott, and my best bud Joel Fitzgerald, now in Denver (where Angie just got a job, too!).

The beach is calling… but I’ll probably only get as far as the front porch, for now…
