May 2011

April ended on a bang, with Selena’s birthday week being a highlight!  We sure enjoyed seeing so many friends and hanging out for fun times.  Thanks everyone!  My Dad has also been in the hospital, having a voluntary back surgery – it is taking a while for him to get back on his feet.  The last week of the month was a travel time for me:  Last month, I mentioned I had one other gig that would take me places….Denver was the place.  I was asked to play music for a wedding at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.  Since my best bud, Joel Fitzgerald, now lives around the Denver area, I made it a business vacation, including much fun around Boulder, downtown Denver, Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Ft. Collins.  A highlight was New Belgium Brewery, home of Fat Tire and many other great beers.  No ghost encounters at the hotel, which is famed for such.  It was a nice time with my friend, and the wedding was also really enjoyable.  Thanks to Rob and Staci for providing me with this adventure!  Best wishes for your life together.

OK, now it’s May, which begins with my birthday!  The first gig of the month is at Sullivan’s on Cinco de Mayo.  So, go get your Tex Mex on and finish the party with Bo Jamison, Joey Decker, Chad Braud, and me at Ringside for a Cinco de Kirko….or Kirko de Mayo.  We want lotsa musicians to join us, too.  I’d love it to be a jam, since many of the gigs at Mexican restaurants should be over early.

May 6, I play at Monjuni’s Italian Restaurant on Jefferson near Government, for Mid City Merchants “Hot Art, Cool Nights.”  This is always a great evening.  You can stroll around all the mid-city businesses, restaurants, and galleries, sampling wines and foods, viewing art, and listening to much live music.  I’ll start around 6pm … here is some info - http://midcitymerchants.org/?p=457

Beausoleil Restaurant brunch gigs continue to be good for me.  My friends are enjoying the food, service, and atmosphere.  I love it there…Sundays, noon to 3pm.  The Rusty Nail has me back on Friday, May 13.  This is also a place I enjoy working – very receptive crowd.  The Rusty Nail is in the Warehouse District, just off the Tchoupitoulas exit, in New Orleans.  I’m not there as often anymore, but I’m planning on a Spanky’s Daiquiris Prairieville gig on May 29 with some friends, for Memorial Day weekend (not sure who it will be as of this writing).  See my Dates page on www.kirkholder.com for all gigs.

Looking forward to seeing all of the faculty at Catholic High of Baton Rouge for their crawfish boil this month, too!  Will this be the last one with Bro. Barry Landry?  Barry, thanks for all you have done for me, over the years!  Super support from you all.

As it gets warmer, festival season slows down, but there are many great ones this month.  Here is a sampling:

Happy Birthdays to Chad Braud, Richard Abbott, Joel Fitzgerald, and Dylan and Raegan Labat!

May 15 is the giant Block Party at Spanky’s Prairieville, with Not For Sale, Mojeaux, and the Chee Weez performing!  This party gets bigger and bigger.  It’s a great lineup this year, too.  Should be one great Sunday!  http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=177981172223893

I hope I can enjoy your company some this month.  I hope my Dad feels better soon.  I hope all our troops get home soon, and I pray for their safety.  I hope all our Alabama neighbors can recover from the horrific tornadoes.  Enjoy the last days of school and the beginning of summer!

Thanks,
Kirk
