September 2009
Well, it’s been a great summer, and there is just a little left to it – but this morning, it was cool, and you can feel that fall is in the air, and footballs will soon be flying in Tiger Stadium and the Dome! Fall festivals are gearing up, and the grass is slowing down. Time to think about another vacation and Oktoberfest and rich beers. It’s a beautiful season here and I’m very excited thinking about it.
Let me thank you for making The Elvis and Jesse Show 2009 a great success. The night was as fun as always predicted, and it went by too fast for Gerard and me. We have both felt a post-Elvis letdown. But, with the help of all involved, ticket sales, and tremendous donations the night of the show, we sent over $1400 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. That is a record! That’s good enough reason to do this every year, but as I’ve said, it’s just the excuse I use to play dress-up… hehe. The band was perfect, and Kyle with Onezia Lounge gave us so much help and free reign. Chris LeBlanc Band rocked, and our fans, friends, and new attendees were incredible. I still haven’t seen all the pics – please send any you have to me. And Gerard Langlois – you were a fantastic Elvis, my friend – great job! I can’t wait for it next year.
I’m not terribly busy with gigs, so I’m hoping to find some new things this fall. But, there are some nice things happening. Thursday, Sept. 3, I’ll be back with Chris LeBlanc at Onezia. This show was very cool during the summer, so we lined it up again. We’ll have some special guests, so come check it out. Probably a $5 cover at Onezia that night. Another night with friends onstage is Sept. 6 – a Sunday night, before Labor Day, with Chad Griffin and Damon King. We’ll be faking our way through each other’s tunes and throwing out some good harmonies. Expecting another big crowd that night, since Monday is a holiday. On that day, I’ll be out at Country Club of Louisiana with Charles Pierce, doing the Labor Day poolside party – the last day their pool is open. If you are a member, we’ll see you that afternoon from 2pm – 5pm. I’ve enjoyed my summer gigs there, and we might even do some fall evenings by the tennis courts.
Check out a new gig in the Woodlawn/Shenandoah area – Ahuuas Mexican Restaurant. I’ve lined up several gigs on their patio. Oh, and the new band will be at Sullivan’s on Friday, Sept. 4. Chad, Matt, and Max join me for some cool songs and good, clean, cheesy fun! Hehe…. I do like what we are doing – still have a ways to go, but it’s a fun act, to me. The rest of the year, we’ll do one Thursday a month at Sully’s Ringside.
Sept. 11 is my last gig at The Pastime, for now. They are pulling back on scheduling music, but I hope we’ll get that going again, someday. Come out and have some fun with me that night.
I will schedule a gig back at Mi Padre’s soon, so check for that addition to the schedule. I love good ol’ Marco there! I’ll be back at On the Half Shell in P’ville in the next few months, too, as well as Monjuni’s on Jefferson. I love the patio at George’s, but they, too, are holding off on scheduling right now. I hope they will reconsider, because that patio will be wonderful in the fall.
Let’s look at the festival calendar and see what is in September:
Not my thang, but 3 Zydeco festivals are all in the same weekend: Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival – www.zydeco.org, Cane River Zydeco Festival - Natchitoches, and Creole Zydeco Festival – www.cajuncountry.org.
Shrimp and Petroleum Festival – Sept. 3 – 7 – www.shrimp-petrofest.org
Cajun Food Festival in Lydia – Sept. 11 – 12 - http://www.iberiatravel.com/hoto.php#450
Pecan Ridge Bluegrass Festival – Sept. 10 – 12 – http://www.sabinebluegrass.com/events/JacksonLa.html
Meat Pie Festival – Sept. 11 – 12 – www.meatpiefestival.com
Oktoberfest – Deutsches Haus – Sept. 25 – 26 (and all weekends in October) – www.deutscheshaus.org
Man, I just can’t predict on football. When you go positive, they lose; when you go pessimistic, they win. LSU will be in one of the four big BCS games, I predict, but not likely the National Championship game. The Saints, providing the defense can stop anybody, are as good as any other team in the NFC, I believe – they are a playoff team this year. We are running out of time with Brees – gotta make a push this year, get a solid running back, and stop the pass. The Saints just might go a long way in the post-season. I predict many cookouts and fun tailgate days on Saturdays, and I predict many mimosas on Sunday mornings at the Chimes. That sounds reasonable!
Thanks, as always, to you all for reading this and for your supportive friendships. I hope everyone is happy and healthy. Good things are always around you, so find them, grab ‘em, and hang on. I hope the hurricanes all spin east and fade into the Atlantic. Enjoy this wonderful time of year, and drop by and catch a song with me, and my friends.
