September 2010

Elvis Week has come and gone, and I missed it – but I hope we’ll make up for it in 2011.  A very long August has ended, and we’ve noticed our world is breaking the bonds of the heat.  The end of summer has been mild and nice, for a few days.  I didn’t miss any gigs in August, and it was a busy, full month.  Been throwing things away, putting stuff in storage for a huge garage sale (ugh), and bringing more stuff into this home, while shutting down another.  While that was going on, football arrived!!  LSU starts this weekend and the Saints kick off Thursday, Sept. 9.  Boy howdy, am I ready:  fall Saturday mornings, all cool, putting the ice chest together, or getting the meat for the grill; Sunday mornings at The Chimes with big mimosas, brunch, and Saints at noon; anticipatory, enthusiastic Friday night gigs; Monday Night Football; hanging in our favorite French Quarter spot and watching the Saints.  Along with the fall festivals kicking up, it’s a wonderful time of year – I guess you know that!

I think the Saints will be fantastic this year, at 12 – 4.  Every sports show is hyping the Falcons and I like that.  Please ignore the Saints, again.  There may be a couple of defensive questions for the team, but I don’t see the Saints having lost much in this off-season.  Motivation and drive will be the key factors, after an emotional Super Bowl hangover.  Who Dat?!

I really have no feeling about LSU.  It’s a crap shoot – we don’t know much about the team, quarterback, coach, scheme, etc.  At least I don’t get the feeling much is known – am I wrong?  Les Miles is a spot-changing big cat – I don’t know what to expect… on any play, game, or season.  I have to listen to the experts and say we will come in 3rd or 4th in our league….6 – 6.  A pessimistic prediction, true dat…

Sunday, Sept. 5 is the day before Labor Day, and we always have a big night at Spanky’s Daiquiris in Prairieville.  This year, I’m joined by the great duo of Dennis Pennington and Kevin Schexnayder – together, we’ve done this trio at On the Half Shell every Thanksgiving Eve for the last few years.  I’m hoping the Wokanowans will show up in force, along with all the Spanky’s irregulars.  It should be fun.  I play the next afternoon at Country Club of Louisiana, with Cam Pyle joining me on the poolside stage!

I’m really enjoying The Rusty Nail gig in New Orleans – back there on Sept. 10.  And, I return for the fall to Monjuni’s on Jefferson on Sept. 17.  All the usual great gigs continue, for which I am very grateful.  See Dates at www.kirkholder.com for all shows.  Oh, the band plays Sullivan’s on Sept. 24 – always a good time with my friends onstage.

Yes, it is the beginning of another festival season.  You know I love them so.  Here are some for you to check out:

Sept. 2 – 6  Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival - http://shrimp-petrofest.org

Sept. 10 – 11  Lydia Cajun Food Fest - http://www.tabasco.com/taste_tent/festivals/cajun_food_festival.cfm  This little festival has always intrigued me, with it’s simple name and small town location.

Sept. 10 – 11  Meat Pie Festival -   http://www.explorenatchitoches.com/events-and-festivals/natchitoches-meat-pie-festival/  The classic Natchitoches meat pie is the star here.

Sept. 24 – 25  Jim Bowie BBQ Duel - http://vidaliala.com/bowie.htm

Sept. 22 – 26  LA Sugar Cane Festival - http://hisugar.org/  Harvest time along the river for cane sugar, and here’s a festival to honor that.
Sept. 23 – 26  Alligator Festival -  http://www.stcharlesrotary.com/alFestival.html

I’d love to put Southern Decadence Celebration on here for you, Ryan, but that site is just too graphic – though, I wish my abs looked like that.. hehe.

In Denver, it’s the Great American Beer Festival.  Again, I won’t make this, but I will, as God is my witness, I will…someday, Joel - http://www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com/

AND… beginning at the end of this month and running through October, it’s Oktoberfest all over the world!!  Have a beer and you’ve joined the party… hehe.  But, there is a fun one at Deutsches Haus in New Orleans.  That building has housed a German Society for decades.  This will be the last one at this location, I’ve heard, since the city has plans for that land.  To be honest, it’s in a spot that probably needs some cleaning up, but this little building will be packed with food, beer, music, and fun.  You will love it:

Happy birthdays to dear friends Bill Stafford, Joan Abbott, Jennifer Morris, and Mrs. Anita Thompson (mom).

I’m working hard to finish booking out my year - so much to get done and so many changes in my household.  It’s a very exciting time and I’m looking forward the shows, the games, the festivals, the parties, the cooking, the beers, the friends, and the family.  I’m indeed blessed and lucky.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL??!!!!!  Geaux Tigers, and Who Dat say dey gon beat dem Saints, WHO DAT?!
